Workshop Descriptions

The Calling out of Sons: What’s a Mother to Do with Teenage Sons? Around the age of 12, a voice speaks within the mind of a boy, “Ain’t no woman going to tell me what to do!” How does a mother cope with the transition of her little boy becoming a man? What is her role? What can she do to not alienate her son as she gives instruction? Answers to these and more!  For mothers and boys 12+

The Calling out of Sons: What’s a Father to Do? For generations, fathers have done the best they could with what they had. But what many didn’t have was vision for what to do with their sons. Hopefully this session will have a generational effect as fathers learn how to help their sons transition from boyhood to manhood. This message also explains why many in this generation struggle in marriage and parenting. For fathers and boys 12+

The Value of Purposefully Teaching Genesis The church is spiritually losing the next generation! Statistics show that nearly 80% of our children are leaving the church as they reach adulthood.  Discover why.  As home educators, we must purposefully present a literal interpretation of Genesis, as written, in order to make the bible relevant to everyday life. Learn how every major Christian doctrine is directly or indirectly found in Genesis, the only reliable historical record of our existence.  Deepen your faith and solidify your confidence in standing firm on the Word of God and teaching it as the ultimate authority for our lives.

Polly Brown is an eight year veteran of homeschooling. She  recently  moved from Virginia to volunteer with Answers in Genesis.   She believes Christianity is under attack and wants to equip believers to be prepared and active in the battle.

ADHD-Nutrition-Learning Disabilities and More! The Medical Viewpoint The Doctor is in. Now is your chance to learn the latest medical discoveries and insights and get YOUR questions answered about ADHD, nutrition, ODD, Asperger’s and much more.

The Purpose of Passion See your child blossom—create an environment that supports your child in finding and following the passion given by God.  For parents of children of all ages: parents whose children are passionate about some subject and the parents “don’t want to mess them up,” parents whose children seem to be drifting, and parents who wonder if their child may be addicted to video games or Internet.  Homeschooling offers the perfect environment to support your children in finding and following their passion..  Laugh as you learn how to help your child follow his purpose and passion while avoiding the most common mistakes.  You’ll be inspired!

Not only is Stephen Guffanti, M.D. a doctor, tutor, author and homeschooler, but he’s also dyslexic and ADHD, and from this unusual perspective he brings hope and understanding to families.  He has studied nutrition and its effects on learning and has served as the medical director of a clinic specializing in learning disorders.  Dr. Guffanti has helped his patients find and follow their passion and gain in health.

Care and Feeding of the Sprouting Mathematician What is the best way to nurture a young mathematician? Plant a variety of sensory experiences. Feed the brain with visualization strategies. Understand place value with the “math way of counting.” Grow the excitement with card games! Cultivate a love for math. Help your sprout flourish and thrive!

Julie Donihue is a representative of Right Start Mathematics.

Project Management Tips for Entrepreneurial High-Schoolers Mark Carrier, a Project Management Professional with many years of multimillion dollar project and program management, shares some tips with entrepreneurial young adults and their parents.  He covers basics like business/project evaluation, initiation, planning, and execution.  Marc will also discuss practical entrepreneurial considerations such as communications, risk, resource management, estimating, budgets, and schedules.

The Softer Side of Child Training In the homes of many Christian homeschoolers, the process of child training has become somewhat regimented, with a focus more on desired outcomes than heart issues.  While things like obedience and character are goals for our children, the foundation for success in these areas is loving relationships with one another and with God.  In this session Cindy Carrier will explore with you how to keep our children’s hearts with us and with the Lord, as we implement some workable (and even enjoyable) child-training strategies.

Marc and Cindy Carrier homeschool their six children in rural Indiana.  They are at our convention with  Value Driven Family.

What Everybody Ought to Know about Timelines Are you trying to keep up with time and place in this continuum of life? Want to help your students remember historical events and their significance to history? Timelines can help you… “boldly know where mankind has gone before”! Transport your, often random, historical studies into a chronological, simple format, and watch your student’s interest and recall soar. This workshop explains the importance of routinely using a timeline and how to get started.

Cindy Wiggers is an author, publisher, MOPS mentor, and motivational speaker. She has a heart to help parents inspire their children with a love for learning.  She represents Geography Matters.

—————————

Teaching Catechism to Students Pastor Sam Allison will cover the importance of giving children the vocabulary necessary to articulate the tenets of their Christian faith through systematic memorization of time-honored catechism.

—————————

College Admissions Few things are more daunting for the homeschool parent than the prospect of preparing college applications. Don Vos, Dean of Admissions at the University of Evansville, and homeschooling father of four, will give you the inside view of the application process. He’ll explain how homeschoolers can communicate their skills and preparation to the college admissions officer, when to start and how to navigate the process. In addition, you’ll learn what is important in your high school recordkeeping and transcript preparation. The session will include time for your questions and discussion on how and when to apply to colleges.

—————————

Homeschooling and the Law Tom Washburne, a local homeschool father and former HSLDA attorney will examine the legal aspects of homeschooling and the laws that govern our freedoms, rights and responsibilities.  Don’t miss this opportunity to educate yourself on this very important aspect of homeschooling.

—————————

Oh Bother!  It’s Time for Science Again! Science study involves the development of skills which are transferable across the curriculum and into adult life.  You will be surprised to learn that you already have many of the tools to “do” this subject in a way which is intrinsically fascinating to students.  Kim Dunkelberger, Mechanical Engineer, Occupational Therapist, and local homeschooling mother of 3, will present answers to the commonly asked question, “Why and how do I do science?” with insights from Winnie the Pooh.  Think! Think! Think!

—————————

Mom’s Panel:  The Long View Is there anyone who understands what I am dealing with?  Yes!  Four veteran local mothers who have homeschooled  children to maturity  will answer your questions as they share from their hearts about God’s faithfulness to  their families throughout their homeschooling years.  Come, bring your questions, and be encouraged.

Custom Designed College without Debt Parents, get your high school students to this workshop!  This spring Ruth Kauk, a local homeschool graduate, will complete her custom designed college degree, which she accomplished cheaply through distance learning, credit by portfolio and credit by examination.  Get the inside scoop on CLEP and DANTES tests; and how to gather much college credit during high school.  Learn how to use courses from multiple colleges to fit into a custom designed degree plan.  Find out about the Big Three distance learning colleges.  Get tips and strategies to take control of your own education and plan your future.

—————————

Realistic Home Schooling Mike and Linda Fendrich will tell you what really goes on behind the closed front door of their typical homeschool.  They may shatter your image of the perfect homeschooler  as you laugh at their frequent blunders and take some self-imposed pressure off yourself.  Through it all, they’ll remind you to make sure the main thing of your school remains the main thing and remind you how necessary God’s grace is.  Their workshop will draw on their personal experience having homeschooled for over 20 years.

—————————

What the Trivium is All About This workshop will introduce you to the classical method.  Learn about the grammar, logic and rhetoric stages of the Trivium; get a short history of the classical approach; and receive highlights of the best books on classical teaching; review the benefits of studying Latin.  Homeschooling mother Ginger Throckmorton, who teaches Classical Conversations classes in Evansville, will also share ways that people can implement aspects of the classical approach without committing completely to a classical curriculum.
