We are a group of 11 families with 32 children ages preschool through high school. We meet once or twice a month for field trips or fellowship. We have an open enrollment, so long as you agree that Christ is the foundation on which we build the education for our children.

We currently have families from Spencer, Warrick, and Perry counties.
We require a $10 membership fee per family, per year. Each family is required to facilitate at least one field trip or gathering per year. We usually meet August through May.

Gears, Levers, Pulleys: Science Workshop

Kim Dunkelberger sends this information about upcoming workshops that she has prepared for upper elementary students.

Students attending these workshops will:

1. Explore machine design principles involving simple machines such as gears, levers, pulleys, and axles,

2. Build working models of real life machines using Lego Technic components

3. Work in pairs within a group of 8 students to encourage group problem solving skills

4. Develop critical thinking skills in an age appropriate format for 9 to 12 year old students

Science Workshop: Gears! What is the tooth about gears?

“GEARS!” – What is the tooth about gears? will be Monday, January 25 (2:00-4:00). Students attending this workshop will:

1. Explore machine design principles involving simple machines such as gears, levers, pulleys, and axles;

2. Build working models of real life machines using Lego Technic components;

3. Work in pairs within a group of 8 students to encourage group problem solving skills;

4. Develop critical thinking skills in an age appropriate format for 9 to 12 year old students.

Additional workshop offerings are available including “LEVERS!”, “PULLEYS!”, and “AXLES!” which will be scheduled per response to this initial workshop. Note: Kim is considering a workshop offering for motorized machine design, but has not purchased Lego Technic components for this yet. If interest in this option is significant, she will pursue this as well.

Homeschool Value Store

The Homeschool Value Store is in a new location. Go out and visit them in their bright new building at 2121 E Warrenton Rd. Turn east between the Pilot Truck Stop and the Jim Hipp Nursery off Hwy 41. Warrenton Road is the first road north of Interstate 64, the one that goes to the Log Inn. They are the second driveway on the right east of the Log Inn.

RtL Oratory and Art Contest

Vanderburgh County Right to Life is sponsoring both an oratory contest and an art contest for high school students grades 10-12. For the oratory contest, students are to research, write, and present an original pro-life speech developed from the 2009 theme: “Freedom for Life”. Applications are due by February 15. Homeschool 2010 Graduation Information

The 2010 graduation planning is now underway. If you are graduating and would like to participate in the homeschool graduation on May 22, please contact Nathan Watson or Juila Ross. We held our first meeting Nov. 20 during which we elected officers and set specific dates concerning the graduation. Officers were elected to help maintain organization and keep everyone involved well informed. If you would like to be a part of the planning committee which works with the officers to plan the graduation, please contact Nathan Watson by December 19. Additionally, March 6 is the cut off date for participating in the graduation. Those who join after Dec. 19 will not be directly involved in the planning process, but they will be able to provide suggestions to the planning committee. Students graduating must also submit a picture and a short biography by March 22. The details of this submission will be worked out as the date approaches.

Eli Lilly and Company offers two web-based programs for K-12 students. Our web-based programs target areas in research, health, and chemistry.

About our Free Web-Based Programs:
Lilly partnered with the Central Indiana Educational Service Center (CIESC) and public educators to develop the following web-based programs -
· The Epidemic Challenge: You Be The Detective
· Chemistry is a Blast

All program materials are aligned to Indiana State and National educational standards and were developed for Middle and High School educators to supplement their curriculum. The program includes teacher guides that can be downloaded with hands-on classroom activities, educator materials, and corresponding video segments. To learn more about these programs and access program materials visit the CIESC website. Additionally, you will find a virtual drug discovery tour called “The Future Begins Yesterday” which is a good resource for students to learn about scientific career opportunities.

If you use either of the web-based programs, we ask that you take 5 minutes to complete an evaluation. Completing the evaluation lets us know if these programs were valuable and if we should develop more web-based programs.

PHC Prep: Now Registering Students!

Registration has officially opened for Patrick Henry College Preparatory Academy’s spring 2010 course, AP® U.S. Government and Politics! The first 50 HSLDA members who register will receive an additional $50 off the regular member price (see tuition rates below). Please register your student as soon as possible!

PHC Prep’s online courses feature excellent academic instruction with a fully integrated Christian worldview. Following the spring 2010 course, PHC Prep will begin offering a full slate of college preparatory courses in the 2010-11 academic year, including:

a.. English Language and Composition (two semesters)
b.. English Literature and Composition (two semesters)
c.. Calculus AB (two semesters)
d.. Microeconomics (fall semester)
e.. Macroeconomics (spring semester)
f.. U.S. Government and Politics (spring semester)
Regular tuition is as follows (not including books and materials):

IAHE Convention Information

For the first time in 25 years of having a convention, attendees who pre-register for the IAHE convention in Indianapolis will no longer have to tear a page out of the Informer or print a copy of the registration form off of the website, find a good pen, secure an envelope, and hope to find a stamp, not to mention writing a check, etc. to register for the convention because it can all be done easily on line with a credit or debit card!

Additionally, those registering online will have the peace of mind knowing that their registration has been confirmed. An email confirmation is sent immediately upon registration! No more wondering if you are going to arrive at the convention center only to discover that stamp you paid so much for didn’t guarantee the delivery of your paper registration form to the IAHE office.

Simply browse to http://ennect.com/e765 and take advantage of our easy online registration. Registration fees are the same as in the past, but a small fee is added to your registration to cover the fees associated with the processing your debit/credit card (the IAHE doesn’t profit from this service). We think you will find this fee small in comparison to the cost and hassle of mailing a paper registration form to us.

Finally, if you would still like to pay by check, simply register at the online site noted above, print-out your registration confirmation, and mail your check to the IAHE with the form. If you don’t have access to a computer, please consider using on at your library, etc., to register online.

Please note that you will not receive a registration confirmation in the mail this year. This is another reason to use the online registration service. All preregistrations will need to arrive a few minutes early at the convention center to receive your wrist bands and convention materials to gain admission to the convention. We will not be issuing name badges this year.
